He disciplines those he loves

His father had never rebuked him by asking, “Why do you behave as you do?” (verse 6a)

Read 1 Kings 1:5-31

Some time after Absalom’s revolt and death, the second born Adonijah, claims the throne unbeknownst to his now very aged and bed-ridden father King David. The above verse makes a comment regarding David’s lack of discipline for Adonijah.

The question of disciplining one’s children has been a controversial topic for at least as long as I have been a parent – most likely longer! What is the correct way to discipline? The bible talks a lot about discipline too. The author of Hebrews says, ‘No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.’ (12:11). Proverbs says, ‘the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.’ (3:12)

Teaching the next generation the right way to live is a difficult task, but a highly rewarding one. Above all, we must remember that love is the key to discipline.

Do a bible search for references to ‘discipline’. What surprises you?

Heavenly Father, thank you that you discipline those who you love. Help me to heed your correction and gain understanding. Amen.
