Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with David but had abandoned him. So Saul sent him away and put him in command of a thousand men. David led his men to battle and was successful in all that he did, because the Lord was with him. Saul noticed David’s success and became even more afraid of him. But everyone in Israel and Judah loved David because he was such a successful leader. (verses 12-16)

Read 1 Samuel 18:5-16

A worker is relocated without warning to the country because he is doing a better job than his boss. Can you imagine the headlines? ‘Unions demand fair treatment!’, ‘Workers unite!’ The current affairs interview centres on the unfairness of it all, the suitability or otherwise of the new job, the possibility of retribution.

It happened to David. Because of a perceived threat to Saul, David was relocated quick smart. We hear no hint of David clamouring for a hearing aimed at slurring Saul. David went right on and did the job he was given very well, because the Lord was with him.

In the face of adversity
look up to the Lord.
See how he loves you;
it’s pledged in his word.
Continue to trust him,
continue to care.
Walk in his Spirit,
he’ll always be there.

Father, in difficult circumstances, help me to put my full trust in you. Amen.
