Jesus’ family

Jesus’ mother and brothers came to him, but were unable to join him because of the crowd. Someone said to Jesus, ‘Your mother and brothers are standing outside and want to see you.’
Jesus said to them all, ‘My mother and brothers are those who hear the word of God and obey it.’
(verses 19-21)

Imagine yourself to be Jesus’ mother, sister or brother and coming to see him. As one of his closest relatives you expect to gain his attention. You know his generous nature towards others, and you naturally assume he will be generous in making time for you. It’s a shock for you to find that he is more interested in other people than in you.

Jesus had an immediate job to do. There were people who needed his healing hand, his words of comfort and peace, his love and compassion. Only after he had attended to these people could he lovingly turn to those who were closely related to him.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could always get your priorities right in your dealings with other people? There’s that neighbour who turns up just when your day ahead is full. She wants to talk, and you really don’t have time. But it might be really important for her, also spiritually. It’s hard to prioritise and to be as gentle as Jesus.

Having returned to heaven, Jesus can now give you his undivided attention. You don’t have to wait in a queue, getting frustrated. You are a valued member of his family, which consists of those who ‘hear the word of God and obey it’. Through his word his Spirit is in you and works for your good.

Jesus, keep me always as a part of your family, and help me to appreciate this great gift that you have given me. Amen.
