Top 4 Contemporary Music Suggestions

The following songs have been carefully reviewed, and are recommended for use in congregational worship, primarily because they point people to Christ and proclaim the message of his word in music and song for this Sunday in the lectionary cycle. They also fit well with other selection guidelines as highlighted in Tips for song selection and Fact Sheet 6: Music in Worship. While the use of a particular song by a band or organisation is not necessarily an endorsement of that group or the entire body of their work, we recognise that any scriptural song is a Spiritual song that can be used to complement a rich diet of worship for God’s people.

Please note, the hyperlinked Youtube clips are provided to give you a sense of how music can be performed or for personal use. You must always obtain permission from the creators of the music videos and the creators of the song before using clips in worship, unless permission is explicitly stated beneath the video.

WE SING THE GLORIOUS CONQUEST

The following hymn is given for this day by Herbert Lindemann in The Daily Office (CPH, 1965). Verses 1, 2 and 4 are provided here in a modernised form:
We sing the glorious conquest
before Damascus’ gate,
when Saul, the persecutor,
came breathing threats and hate;
the ravening wolf rushed forward
to make the sheep his prey,
but see! the Shepherd met him
and claimed his life today!

O glory beyond telling
that struck across his path!
O light that pierced and blinded
the zealot in his wrath!
O voice that spoke within him
the calm, reproving word!
O love that sought and made him
the servant of the Lord.

Lord, teach your church to love you,
and in the darkest hour
of weakness and of danger
to trust your hidden power.
For by your grace and mercy
Paul’s hate and fear were bound,
and in your bold opponent,
your chosen saint was found.

BY ALL YOUR SAINTS

Horatio Bolton Nelson wrote this hymn which has various middle verses for various minor festival occasions. It may be sung to the tune Nyland (LH 16), or to King’s Lynn (TIS 249). The first and last verses given below are as they appear in Lutheran Worship and Lutheran Book of Worship; the middle verse is Nelson’s original that has been slightly modernised. The first line of verse 1 could be changed to: ‘By saints on earth who struggle’.

By all your saints in warfare,
for all your saints at rest,
your holy name, O Jesus,
for evermore be blest!
For you have won the battle
that they might wear the crown;
and now they shine in glory
reflected from your throne.

You sent your light from heaven,
and struck Saul down with awe.
You spoke to him and called him,
through visions that he saw.
O Lord, for Paul’s conversion,
we praise your name today.
Come, lighten all our darkness,
and guide us on our way.

Then let us praise the Father,
and worship God the Son,
and sing to God the Spirit,
eternal Three-in-one,
till all the ransomed number
fall down before the throne,
ascribing power and glory,
and praise to God alone.

Psalms

Psalm 67

For musical settings of Psalm 67, see Psalm_67_p110.pdf, Psalm_67_p111.pdf , Psalm_67_p112.pdf

A metrical version of Psalm 67 is given in TIS, no. 37 Our God, be gracious unto us.

The following metrical version of Psalm 67, by David Schütz, may be sung to the tune ‘Turn to me with all your heart’, ATO 331. If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

God be gracious and bless us,
make your face shine upon us,
then the earth will know your way,
nations know your saving.

Let the peoples praise you, God;
all humanity praise you.
Let the nations all rejoice,
let them sing with gladness.

You guide every race on earth,
and you judge us with justice.
Let the peoples praise you, God;
all the peoples praise you.

Earth has yielded its reward,
God, our own God, has blessed us.
May God bless us always and
all the earth revere him.
