Top 4 Contemporary Music Suggestions

The following songs have been carefully reviewed, and are recommended for use in congregational worship, primarily because they point people to Christ and proclaim the message of his word in music and song for this Sunday in the lectionary cycle. They also fit well with other selection guidelines as highlighted in Tips for song selection and Fact Sheet 6: Music in Worship. While the use of a particular song by a band or organisation is not necessarily an endorsement of that group or the entire body of their work, we recognise that any scriptural song is a Spiritual song that can be used to complement a rich diet of worship for God’s people.

Please note, the hyperlinked Youtube clips are provided to give you a sense of how music can be performed or for personal use. You must always obtain permission from the creators of the music videos and the creators of the song before using clips in worship, unless permission is explicitly stated beneath the video.

Psalms

PSALM 48

The following paraphrase of Psalm 48 by David Schütz may be sung to the tune of ‘Make my life to be’, ATN 81. If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

Our Lord God is great,
greatly to be praised,
on Mount Zion, in the city of our God.
Everybody’s joy
is his holy hill,
high and beautiful, the city of our King!
Inside its walls and towers,
God is our sure defence;
when the powers of earth attacked it, they all failed!
They were put to flight –
running in their fear –
tossing up and down like ships caught in a storm!

So we now have seen,
just as we have heard,
in the city of our God, the Lord of hosts:
God has made it strong!
Victory is his!
In your temple, God, our thoughts are of your love!
Your name is like your praise,
we hear it everywhere,
everyone rejoices when your judgment’s heard!
God will be our guide;
go around the town,
tell the children yet to come, this is our God!

PSALM 123

The following paraphrase by David Schütz of Psalm 123 may be sung to the tune Veni, Immanuel (LH 2, TIS 265) or Melita (LH 578, TIS 138) or another 8.8.8.8.8.8 tune. If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

To you, O Lord, I lift my eyes,
to you, enthroned in heaven above.
As servants look up to their lord,
we lift our eyes to God the Lord,
until he turns his eyes t’ward us,
and shows his mercy and his love.

Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray,
for we are treated with contempt.
We’ve had more than our fill of scorn
from those who live in ease and pride.
O turn, O Lord, be merciful
for we have put our trust in you.
