LCA Commission on Worship
Happy New Church Year to you! The First Sunday of Advent is the beginning of the church year. The word ‘advent’ means ‘coming’. During this time we look forward to our Lord’s coming as a human baby at Bethlehem and also to his final coming as king at the end of time. We also remember his continual coming to his people in his word and sacraments. Advent is therefore a time of waiting, preparing, and hoping. This involves both repentance and joyful anticipation.
Traditionally, this is a time when the Advent Wreath is lit. Wreath-making instructions and the lighting prayers are included in Liturgy and Prayers tab. During Advent, your congregation might like to hold an Advent Readings and Carols Service. You can find an order of service with song suggestions the Service Orders tab.
The Feast of St Andrew, Apostle is celebrated on 30 November. Congregations wishing to mark this festival can find worship resources here.
