Top 4 Contemporary Music Suggestions

The following songs have been carefully reviewed, and are recommended for use in congregational worship, primarily because they point people to Christ and proclaim the message of his word in music and song for this Sunday in the lectionary cycle. They also fit well with other selection guidelines as highlighted in Tips for song selection and Fact Sheet 6: Music in Worship. While the use of a particular song by a band or organisation is not necessarily an endorsement of that group or the entire body of their work, we recognise that any scriptural song is a Spiritual song that can be used to complement a rich diet of worship for God’s people.

Please note, the hyperlinked Youtube clips are provided to give you a sense of how music can be performed or for personal use. You must always obtain permission from the creators of the music videos and the creators of the song before using clips in worship, unless permission is explicitly stated beneath the video.

Psalms

a) PSALMS 42 & 43

The following paraphrase of Psalms 42 and 43 is by David Schubert (Psalm 42) and David Schütz (Psalm 43). Use them together to the tune by Olga Radke given at LHS 869 (‘Like the deer’).

Response:    Why should I be sad, why troubled so,
I will trust and praise my Saviour God.

Psalm 42
Like the deer that yearns for running streams,
so I long for you, my Lord, my God.
How I thirst for you, the living God;
when can I behold the face of God?

Tears have been my food, by night and day;
people say to me: Where is your God?
I recall the past amid my grief:
how we went with joy to worship God.

Deep is calling deep, as waters roar;
like the waves of grief that flood my soul.
Daily God will send his constant love;
and at night I will praise the God of life.

Psalm 43
Vindicate me, God, defend my cause,
and deliver me from unjust hands.
Since you are my God, why cast me off?
Why should I be sad and so weighed down?

O send out your light, send out your truth;
let them bring me to your holy hill.
So will I approach your altar, Lord.
I will praise you, God, upon the harp.

b) PSALM 22

The following paraphrase of Psalm 22:19-28, by David Schütz, may be sung to the tune ‘Vine and fig tree’ (ATN 36). Note that in the second last bar, the second crotchet must be played as two quavers.

But you, O Lord, do not be far from me!
My Helper, quickly come to me!
And from the sword and the dog, preserve me;
and from the lion, rescue me.
You saved me from the wild bull’s horn,
so I will always praise your name;
so I will praise you in your house,
where all your people come to pray.

Now praise the Lord, everyone who fears him!
All Jacob’s children, praise his name;
and all you children of Israel, fear him,
and glorify him every day!
For he does not despise the poor,
those who are down are not ignored.
He did not hide his face from me,
he heard my cry and answered me.

So when I stand in the congregation;
there all my praise will come from him.
And in the presence of those who fear him,
there I will pay my vows to him.
Then there will be food for the poor,
then they will all be satisfied.
Praise him, all those who seek the Lord,
and may your spirit never die.

Then shall the ends of the earth remember
and ev’ry land turn to the Lord,
and all the fam’lies of ev’ry nation
shall worship him and hear his word.
For all dominion is the Lord’s,
power and might belong to him.
He rules the nations as their king,
he brings his love and grace to them.
