The Easter Vigil is a part of the ‘Three Days to Easter’ celebration, completing the action that was begun on Maundy Thursday.

It is an optional liturgy, not frequently celebrated in the Lutheran Church, but one which is theologically and spiritually rich. For a comprehensive understanding of the Easter Vigil, read here.

The Easter Vigil begins in darkness. This can cause a little chaos, and it may take a few years of experimentation before you find out the best way of doing things in your congregation. For suggestions on how to hold this service, visit the various tabs on this page.

The full liturgy contains nine Old Testament readings in addition to the service. You may wish to read all nine or use a condensed service with four Old Testament readings. All will be made available in the Service Orders and Liturgy and Prayers tabs of this page.
