Our cup overflows
Happy are those who have the God of Jacob to help them
and who depend on the LORD their God,
the Creator of heaven, earth, and sea,
and all that is in them.
He always keeps his promises;
he judges in favour of the oppressed
and gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets prisoners free
and gives sight to the blind. (verses 5-8a)
Read Psalm 146
A doctor was very concerned about his patient. She was pale and listless and showed many symptoms of a serious disease. Fearing the worst he ordered tests to be done. Imagine his surprise when she breezed into his office a fortnight later a picture of health. ‘I’ve met someone special’, she said, ‘I’m in love’.
The world had become a better place for this woman. Her glass was now half full, and her depression disappeared.
You live in a gloomy world. You are bombarded daily with the worst of human nature on TV, in the papers and on radio. It’s depressing. Yet, when you know the love of God, you see his hand is still in control. He gives you new sight. He lifts you up and watches over you. And, with his love surrounding you, it’s easier to face the problems of the world. Your cup is more than half full; it overflows.
Lord, sometimes my life is hard. But when I think of all that you have done for me, my love for you overflows and my burdens seem lighter. Amen.
