No strings attached
‘Go and preach, “The Kingdom of heaven is near!” Heal the sick, bring the dead back to life, heal those who suffer from dreaded skin diseases, and drive out demons. You have received without paying, so give without being paid.’ (verses 7,8)
Read Matthew 10:5-15
Every now and again I receive an offer in the mail for a special deal on membership at a local health club. ‘Come and lose weight while you have fun, get fit, play sport, meet new friends.’ It sends me on a huge guilt trip. I can’t go as I am. I have to get into shape and lose weight before joining, or I’ll feel the odd one out.
The kingdom of heaven is bigger and better than any health club. It’s unique, one of a kind. There’s no joining fee, no contract to sign, no small print, no criteria to meet (like getting fit first). The salespeople were sent out with very specific instructions: Tell everyone the good news about this kingdom of heaven. The benefits are immediate. There’s forgiveness, acceptance, love – in fact a whole new life. You will receive more than you could ever imagine: a relationship with the King.
So, unlike the health club, there are no strings attached. What’s your end of the deal? Take up the invitation. Recognise your need for a complete life-change. Start with the realisation that God accepts you just as you are, wherever you are in life, and with whatever ‘health’ issues you have. Be glad that he desires a living relationship with you.
Father, I come to you just as I am. Thank you for wanting me and accepting me. Keep working in my life day by day. Amen.
