Everlasting purses
‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the Kingdom. Sell all your belongings and give the money to the poor. Provide for yourselves purses that don’t wear out, and save your riches in heaven, where they will never decrease, because no thief can get to them, and no moth can destroy them. For your heart will always be where you r riches are.’ (verses 32-34)
Read Luke 12:32-40
Every now and then a news item shows a family whose house has been completely destroyed by fire. The cameras show close-ups of distraught faces and crying children, and the world weeps with them. Everything gone. How terrible! Yet on one occasion the cameras zoomed in on a mother who simply shrugged and said, ‘We lost material possessions only. That is all. They can eventually be replaced. We have our family and our faith. That is all that matters.’ She had a ‘purse that did not wear out’.
The Bible says, ‘Your heart will always be where your riches are’.
You do not need earthly treasures to know that God loves you. A fancy house, two cars and designer clothes are unnecessary for fulfilment. Fill your heart with the Lord and you will know complete contentment in your life.
Everything I have, Lord, is from you. Help me to fill my heart with you r love, so that I may have true happiness. Amen.
