The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has invited the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) to participate in its annual International Scholarship Program. Under the program, the ELCA will provide a scholarship for a person in the LCA/NZ who is either already in a leadership position in the church or commits to be placed in a leadership position at the conclusion of their study.
The following programs are being offered:
- Long-Term Academic Scholarship: This application should be used by individuals seeking academic programs of study that last 12 months or longer. Long-Term Scholarships can apply toward academic programs located either in or near the applicant’s home country or in another part of the world (such as the United States).
- Short-Term Academic Scholarship: This application should be used by individuals seeking programs of study that last less than 12 months.
- Global Sabbatical: This application should be used by current instructors/professors/educators who wish to teach at an institution in another part of the world during a sabbatical. This application should not be used by individuals seeking to study in an academic degree program.
Although many applicants propose study in areas of theology, the ELCA also awards scholarships for other subject areas (medicine, teaching, computer science, music, English language, social work etc).
The LCA will select one candidate from the applications received. This candidate will be required to submit a formal application to the ELCA, which will be considered along with other applications from around the world. In the first instance, you should register your interest with Mr Peter Schirmer, Executive Officer of the Church firstname.lastname@example.org outlining how one of the above scholarships would assist you to develop your skills as a leader in the LCA/NZ or equip you to become a leader.
In order to meet the tight timeframe for the formal application to the ELCA, you must register your interest by 7 September.
LCA Study Grants
Study grants are available to members of the LCA for study that will better equip them for service within the church.
Usually up to $5000 for any one grant, the funding is to be used to cover costs associated with a study program or training project. Most grants are awarded to support courses no longer than one year full-time in duration.
In 2018 there were two rounds of grants. The closing date for applications for study starting between July and December 2018 was 15 April. In July applications were open for study starting between January to June 2019.
Applicants should check the final enrolment date for their chosen course and should submit an application for an LCA Study Grant earlier than the closing date if required.
