Refugee Week – 17-23 June 2018

My apologies for being slow off the mark – this week seems to have crept up on me! However, it’s never too late to remember the plight of refugees in our worship. Congregations who wish to do so could sing LHS 750 When Jesus lived among us during their service and could include the following (or similar) intercessions in the Prayer of the Church:

We thank you that you rescued your people from oppression and persecution as an alien minority in Egypt and brought them to their promised land. Have mercy on all those who are oppressed, rescue them from their oppressors, and provide a safe place for them to live in.
Lord, in your mercy:   Hear our prayer.

We thank you that you are a God of justice and mercy. Curb all political injustice and end all civil wars in every land, so that in every country people may lead safe, peaceful and productive lives. Help our political leaders to deal justly and wisely with all asylum seekers and treat all refugees fairly and compassionately.
Lord, in your mercy:   Hear our prayer.

We thank you that you are the Creator and Ruler of all the many different people on earth. Encourage us and our fellow citizens to overcome our prejudices against people who differ from us, and to appreciate the unique contribution that each different group makes to our society and its enrichment.
Lord, in your mercy:   Hear our prayer.

We thank you that you provide a place of spiritual refuge for us and all people in your church through your Son. Open our eyes, so that we may see the needs of refugees. Open our ears, so that we may hear the cries of strangers. Open our mouths, so that we may speak words of welcome to newcomers in our midst. Open our hands, so that we may provide help for them to be at home with us. Open our hearts, so that we may recognize your Son in them and receive him through them.
Lord, in your mercy:   Hear our prayer.
