Theology and Inter-Church Relations
Commission on Theology and Inter-Church Relations
The Commission on Theology and Inter-Church Relations (CTICR) advises the LCA in matters of theology and in relationships with other Lutheran churches worldwide and churches of other denominations within Australia. The commission studies topical theological issues, with a view to giving its considered advice, in the form of agreed statements, to the presidents, the General Church Council, the pastors, conferences, and the broad membership of the LCA.
Through its ecumenical dialogues, it has an ongoing program of theological discussion with the major church bodies in Australia, it hears reports from the National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA) and the NCCA’s theological body, the Faith and Unity Commission, and it monitors developments within Lutheran World Federation and the International Lutheran Council.
Current theological issues under the spotlight:
- Ordination of women
- Hermeneutics (how we read the Bible)
- Communion of infants
Ecumenical Dialogue
Australian Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue
The Lutheran participants in this dialogue are elected by the CTICR, acting on behalf of the church, to dialogue with representatives of the Roman Catholic Church in matters of faith, doctrine, and practice. The aim of our dialogue is that through mutual study of the Scriptures, and in light of the teaching of the church throughout its history, and for our part the Lutheran Confessional writings in particular, our two churches may grow in mutual understanding and confession of the truth of the gospel.
Lutheran-Anglican Dialogue
Lutheran-Anglican Dialogue conducts bipartite dialogue with the Anglican Church of Australia with a view to closer cooperation between the two Churches.
Lutheran-Uniting Dialogue
Lutheran-Uniting Dialogue is currently working towards the adoption of a Declaration of Relationship between our two churches.
