Connecting through Food and Hospitality

Operation Connect

Operation Connect is an exciting new resource for congregations wishing to use the gifts of food and hospitality to connect with friends, families and community.

Hospitality involving food is something Lutherans have always been good at. It’s indigenous to who we are. Perhaps it started with the traditional German heritage many of us share – where hard manual labour fuelled large healthy appetites. Perhaps it’s the blessings we now enjoy, thanks to the many cultures that gather in our Australian and New Zealand congregations as Lutherans. Perhaps it all goes back to Martin Luther himself who regularly brought people together around food and wine for his famous ‘Table Talk’ sessions.

But the real inspiration for Operation Connect is the example of Jesus who enjoyed food and hospitality as a way to break down barriers and connect with those for whom society had no time. The series of food-focused Bible studies within Operation Connect offers you the chance to discover new insights.

An African dinner. Christmas in July. A ‘What Jesus would have eaten?’ meal. And dozens more ideas congregations have been talked about or tried. At Operation Connect you’ll not only find ideas for events, you’ll also find recipes, tips on how to make a great event, invitation and media release templates, even  food-handling guidelines. To get you inspired there are case studies of what Lutheran congregations are already doing. You’ll be amazed at the imagination and ideas!

Operation Connect is presented as a service and resource for you to use as best suits your local community. Bon appétit!

Operation Connect is supported by funds raised through the Lutheran Winemakers Club.

Longest Lutheran Lunch

Sunday, 30 October

Masterchef. My Kitchen Rules. Poh’s Kitchen. Jamie, Nigella … it seems our lives are full of food and foodies these days.

Yet we Lutherans have been doing great food ‘forever’. That’s why, to launch Operation Connect (the LCA’s hospitality initiative), you and your congregation are invited to hold a Longest Lutheran Lunch.

The dream is to have the ‘longest’ in three ways:

  • sit at tables in a single long row
  • take your time and have a long leisurely meal together
  • have meals going the long way from New Zealand right across Australia to finish in Western Australia!

When? What better time than Reformation Sunday – 30 October – when we celebrate in a special way God’s gift of grace, and the insights that make us distinctively Lutheran.

Simply create the meal your congregation specialises in – German feast, African celebration, South African BBQ, Slovak smorgasbord – it’s up to you. Then invite along friends and family.

The Longest Lutheran Lunch resources are designed simply to be a kick-start for you. We know your skills and local talents can take things much further. So explore, use, adapt, ignore – whatever you like!

Most of all, share – your recipes, stories and idea. You'll find out more here.

Now all you have to do is get started!
