Lutheran Bible Translators Australia
Lutheran Bible Translators Australia (LBTA) oversees the ongoing promotion of Bible translation and literacy work, which helps to bring people to faith in Jesus Christ. The LBTA committee of around five members meets four times a year. We organise an annual thanksgiving service and luncheon to thank our supporters and to foster continued interest in this important ministry.
LBTA was formally endorsed as a committee to operate under the control of the then Board for Overseas Mission and Church Cooperation (BOMCC) at the 1981 General Synod of the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA), and has continued to operate under the guidelines adopted at that time. A specifically Lutheran thrust to the cause of Bible translation was seen as a way to get members of the LCA more involved in this important Christian outreach.
Our translators
In partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators (WBT), LBTA has employed Margaret Mickan since 1984, initially as a literacy worker and more recently as a Bible translator among the 30,000 Kriol-speaking indigenous people across northern Australia. Her work culminated in the production of the completed Kriol Bible in 2007. She continues to work among Kriol speakers promoting use of this translation.
Between 1989 and 2001 Bill and Di Eckermann were employed to produce a New Testament for the 10,000 speakers of the Bukawa language around Lae in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Bill continues to work as a consultant to both WBT and LBTA.
In 2011 Hanna Schultz was accepted as member-in-training, attending WBT in Melbourne to complete her linguistic studies before she ventures into an area of translation need in PNG or the Solomon Islands.
