Awareness Week 2008

The theme for Awareness Week (10th-14th March) is REAL Development. This theme has been chosen as we believe it is so important for students and teachers to understand about long-term, sustainable development that empowers the poor and oppressed peoples of the world. As ALWS has only recently begun its program in Papua New Guinea, this wonderful country has been chosen as the focus country to show examples and teach our students and staff about REAL Development. The Lutheran Church of Australia and Lutheran Education Australia both have long-standing partnerships with Papua New Guinea, so many opportunities for links to the country and its people are possible.

The Bible verse selected for use in Awareness Week this year is from 1 John 4:19: We loved because God first loved us. All that we do at ALWS is based on God’s love for us. We want to help others because God showed us real love in Jesus. All that we plan and complete is based on prayer and a deep sense of care, concern and love for the poor and oppressed of the world. Our love of others comes from God.

As well as looking at issues surrounding REAL Development, Awareness Week provides an ideal starting point for considering issues of injustice. It also provides an opportunity for students to consider what ALWS is doing in rural communities in Papua New Guinea, and the possibilities to make links to previous learning (for example Sudan or the Bhutanese refugees), or make comparisons to the Indigenous peoples of Australia.
